Genuine shibari or kinbaku ropes, which have now become a Japanese art form, are made of hemp. It’s easy to tell if they’re genuine: hemp has a distinctive smell.

Japanese bondage (緊縛, kinbaku?, ‘bondage’) or kinbaku-bi (緊縛美?, ‘beautiful bondage’) is a type of Japanese bondage (sexual or otherwise) that can form part of BDSM play. It involves restraining the bound person using predefined geometric patterns with a cord usually 6 to 8 millimetres in diameter, made of hemp or jute.

The word shibari (縛り?), meaning ‘tied, bound’, used in Japan to describe the art of tying up packages, became the most common term in the West in the 1990s to refer to the art of kinbaku bondage.

It is established that modern Japanese bondage has its origins in medieval Japanese society. The use of military binding in all its forms dates back at least to the 15th century; kinbaku was practised there both as corporal punishment and as a technique for capture and arrest.

In this context, it was known as hojōjutsu. Specialists in these techniques were called nawashi. Nobles and samurai could only be restrained in accordance with specific codes and by specific individuals, so as not to compromise their honour.

It should be noted that being sentenced to kinbaku as corporal punishment was horrific. Indeed, over time, the ropes caused excruciating cramps. This was followed by numbness and eventually the loss of use of the limbs.
